that 'ship' has sailed...

"there is a difference between negative (or positive) opinion and an observational assessment"

When it comes to rarities, this is what comes to most minds:
- Blue diamonds
- Uranium
- A straight politician (and I ain’t referring to sexual orientation)
- A girl who doesn’t think she’s fat
- A hippie who showers daily

- An indestructible ring that can make you vanish
- A verbal turtle that isn’t a pizza-eating Ninja
- A meat-eating vegan (they do exist)
- An A-student bartender…
Yet, none mention the greatest rarity of all: true friendship. To say that true friendship does not exist is to be cynical, melodramatic, or pompously self-righteous; I am not your typical cynic though I love the night, and do entertain from time to time thoughts about Armageddon. Despite having a flare for theatrics, I am not one to cry wolf*. Lastly, I would like to think that I am not ‘ethically arrogant’ (warning, this term is copyrighted). So, having ruled out the impossibility of true friendship let me attempt to explain how rare it is to actually find it.
Picture if you will that you are walking on the street. Something shiny captures your attention; lo and behold, you have just picked up the perfect diamond. Suddenly, a magnificent sports car halts at your feet and tells you (yeah, it talks, haven’t you seen knight rider) that you have been chosen as its driver. You are enjoying the exceptional ride, going all over the place, when you reach the desert. Once again, something shining grabs hold of your gaze. You pull over; it is a gold ring this time. When you try to pick it up, it turns out to be chained to the drain stopper of an undiscovered oil field! As you throw yourself back into the car trying to digest all that is happening, a breathtaking ethereal woman who happens to be exactly your type throws herself in your arms professing her undying love for you…
Now, if you calculate the probability of all of the above events occurring, and in that particular order, maybe, maybe you might get what the probability is of finding true friendship!
P.S.: fyi, you do not have as many friends as facebook says you do.

*cry wolf: in reference to the fable 'the boy who cried wolf'
